Cutting the Gains

Cutting the Gains
The gains are a ramp over the last 4 " of the plank so that when the ends are brought together they will come a lot closer together and avoid a very steppy/ugly join. I set up a guide along the inside edge of the rebate to make sure I cut it in a straight line. They came up quite nice in the end but I now have to be very careful with the wafer thin scarff joint at one end and thin gain at the other.

Cute Second hand rebate plane, only $20
I did not have a plane suitable to do this job so I went hunting at the local market and picked up this little one for $20. It was a little dirty and rusty but 3/4" later he was almost as good as new. It then took about 1/2 hour of testing to get the blade in the right position and on the right angle.
